ENVIRONMENTAL CITY
RESEARCH GROUP
@ HONGIK UNIVERSITY
The Environmental City Research Group, based in the Department of Urban Design and Planning at Hongik University, Seoul, South Korea, primarily focuses on planning and design of cities that maximize their capacity to cope with climate, which may be undergoing a significant change or experiencing extreme events. We are especially interested in how the city can be shaped in a way that incorporates microclimate and thermal comfort as its key drivers. Some of our recent concerns include urban ventilation, urban heat island, and fine dust. Our secondary focus, which may may sound a little different from the first, is on the transformation of suburbs in Asia. We look at how they emerge and transform, as well as how their residents' daily lives are affected. We also investigate their sustainability, resilience, and livability. We excavate features that distinguish them from those in the American and European city regions, which are more widely known. We use a combination of approaches and technologies and like to engage in practical and theoretical discussions that generate from what we observe and critique. We are always open to new ideas and collaboration.
